<description>Symposium: The Cold War Continuum - The role of sound systems in the vibrational delusions of Sonic Warfare

A conversation with Jessica Edwards about new 'transmission' strategies and soundings for opening up sound and sound(ing) systems.

SOUND(ING) SYSTEMS is an exciting interactive program developed under the artistic direction and curation of Nik Nowak within the context of his exhibition Schizo Sonics currently exhibiting at Berlin’s KINDL – Center for Contemporary Art (13.9.2020 – 15.5.2021).

The bonus concept unfolded via a one-day symposium and three live performances during 20.03.2021 – 24.04.21, which can be watched on their website.
SOUND(ING) SYSTEMS is a free program that interrogates the political and sonic resonances of physical and virtual boundaries. During the Cold War there were fortified borders, especially along the Iron Curtain.

Since the 1990s, there has been increasing investment in border installations to ‘protect’ against immigrants from the global south. Thousands of people escaping all forms of war, persecution and seeking asylum, die in their attempts to flee these unlivable conditions every year. Organizations like Sea-Watch are continuously fighting the deadly consequences and indifference of the increasing isolationism of Europe.

If you have liked the symposium and program of musical events please help them in their support of Sea-Watch and donate here.

		<description>Interview: All Boats podast

Berlin is known to many as one of the best clubbing cities in Europe. Home to techno, free-thinking, radical expression and inclusivity - but how inclusive is it really?

This episode explores the “Politics of the Dance Floor” through the work of Transmission, a networking-platform that amplifies the politics and history of club and rave culture.

Founders, Sarah Farina and Dr. Kerstin Meißner, share how they have built a community through critical conversation. A community that enables social justice and works to create safe and inclusive dance floors for everyone. Sarah, a DJ, and Kerstin, a researcher, have looked to the intersections of academia, activism and music culture to create cultural discourse around the social issues within nightlife.

Thanks to Jill Beytin &#38;amp; Julia Joubert for the invite!

Transcript
HKW · Politics of the Dance Floor: Sustainability

How can nightlife be designed in harmony with the earth’s finite resources? What would really be necessary to create a club experience that takes the climate and fragility of all of us into account? And how does this relate to physical pleasure? Community organiser&#38;nbsp;Sarj Lynch hosts the second episode of the Politics of the Dance Floor podcast and discusses sustainability in club culture with Camille Barton, Avril Ceballos and Konstanze Meyer. They share their visions of practices that allow life to flourish: to go from greenwashing to environmental justice, from discrimination to inclusion, from marginalization to support. The motto of the hour: We’re a part of the world, let’s take care of it.

The producer, performer and astrophysicist houaïda speaks with the founder of an independent communications agency Melissa Taylor, the label manager Nicky Böhm and the DJ and musicologist He Zhao about social change and the responsibility of the dance community.

What is the relationship between rave and resistance?
Can raving be a form of “pleasure activism” (Adrienne Maree Brown, 2019)?
What does social justice look like in the clubbing context and beyond?

The second edition of On Music&#38;nbsp;sets its sights on the dance floor.

Even if the practice and consumption of music increasingly take place online, music still stands for a direct, shared experience. However, when escapism and profit making prevail in club culture, the importance of the dance floor as a political place is overlooked. In the urban centers around the world, various actors are working on defending this political place and imagining it over and over again.

Mike Banks, music producer and co-founder of Underground Resistance, producer, DJ and promoter Phatstoki, DJ and radio host Eugenia Seriakov from the Sound System Culture collective and the legal ethnographer Larisa Kingston Mann aka DJ Ripley will talk with moderator and DJ Samira Hamid Sharifu about their experiences in the underground club and music scene and the possibilities for making a difference in their communities.
Where does the music come from and who actually has access to the dance floor?
What could strategies for sustainable networking be like?
What does a global community of actors and locations from the club scene look like if they mutually support one another and together meet and counteract the political challenges of today?
How are experiences in Detroit and New York, Berlin and Johannesburg connected, even though the realities of life are so different?

The discussion will be followed by music: DJ and producer Sarah Farina will play a set with the panel guests’ favorite tunes. Phatstoki, part of Johannesburg’s Pussy Party Team, will close the evening with sounds that break through genre boundaries.

Curated by Sarah Farina and Kerstin Meißner
